Proxy SF Free Spring Film Series. March 26 – June 7, 2016.
Proxy SF Free Spring Film Series kicks off tonight with Laurie Anderson’s critically acclaimed film Heart of a Dog.
Over the next few months this outdoor gem will showcase seven cinematic treats, live performances, and visual surprises. Think San Francisco’s answer to a drive-in movie sans cars.
THE DEAL:
Proxy is San Francisco’s uber cool, temporary (here until 2020), two-block culture experience with movies, art, music, eats, drinks, and retail.
Held in a former parking lot, the walk-in outdoor theater features a 20 foot tall screen, BYOS (bring your own seat), and an eclectic assortment of films and other events. Admission is free, zip, nada, nothing.
Proxy SF Free Spring Film Series starts tonight with a totally dog friendly event. The movie is Heart of a Dog, dogs are welcome to attend, you can check out adoptable dogs before the show and purchase gourmet dog treats. Woof.
6 Tips for Proxy SF Free Outdoor Spring Film Series:
- Come early to stake out your spot, set up your amazing picnic and pat yourself on the back for living in (or near) this first class city. No BYOB (but booze is for sale.)
- Forgot your picnic? No worries – eats and drinks are for sale on site. Feel Good Bonus: proceeds from the concessions help fund the series.
- Dogs are allowed but only bring your dog if it plays well with others and doesn’t get stressed out in a crowded, stimulating, and noisy environment populated with lots of dogs and people.
- Buy organic dog treats from Paw Patch Pastries.
- For comfy viewing bring low beach chairs. No chairs? Bring a blanket or rent astro turf!
- Dress in layers -#Karlthefog can arrive with no warning.

Dog Adoptions from Animal Care and Control 5-7pm. Show starts at 7:45 pm.
Getting there: Limited street parking but easily accessible by public transit. Muni: Bus Routes: 21, 5 -or- a 5 minute walk from the Van Ness or Civic Center Muni Station. BART – 5 minute walk the Civic Center BART Station.

- Friday, April 8: Proxy + KQED – The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution
- Friday, April 15: Proxy + McSweeney’s An evening with The Organist. Featuring a live performance by Christopher Owens (from Girls)
- Friday, April 22: Proxy + Sundance – Award-winning and selected short films from the 2016 Sundance Film Festival
- Friday, April 29: Proxy + SF International Film Festival – Film to be announced
- Tuesday, June 7: Proxy + SF Jazz – Second Annual Neighborhood Block Party. Live music from Brass Band Mission and Beso Negro. Plus movies on the big screen, a beer garden, and food trucks.
MY TAKE:
Two thumbs way up for Proxy SF Free Outdoor Spring Film Series. This is San Francisco at its think-outside-the-parking-lot best.
